Committee for Educating Policy Leaders

Read Across America Event

March 2017

Every year, Options for Learning's Committee for Educating Policy Leaders (CEPL) invites community leaders to visit our child development programs in celebration of Read Across America.  We always have a fantastic turnout and the children are delighted to have visitors read to them.  Since Dr. Seuss's birthday is celebrated in March, his beloved classics are often chosen for this event.

Read Across America is an opportunity to connect with the children in our programs and see the importance of literacy in action at our various centers.  After reading to the children, our guests are encouraged to stay for continued learning activities and games involving the book they just read.

Here's a partial list of our guests in 2016:

  • Assemblymember Ed Chau read I Can Read with My Eyes Shut
  • Senator Liu read One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish
  • Assemblymember Chris Holden read The Foot Book
  • U.S. Representative Field Representative Leia J. Hernandez read Oh, the Places You’ll Go
  • Angelica Hernandez, staff member of Senator Ed Hernandez, read Corduroy's Party
  • Stepanie Hu, staff member of U.S. Congressman Ed Royce, read Cat in the Hat
  • Additionally, we had a variety of reading buddies during the month, ranging from police officers, firefighters and mail carriers to school principals, nurses, librarians and military officers.

Won't you consider joining us this year?  Contact our Communications Department at (626) 967-7848 for more information.

Happy Reading!
