Annual Policymaker Breakfast

The 35th Annual Policymaker Breakfast was a Big Success!

Options for Learning held our annual Policymaker Breakfast on Friday, April 27th.  Pasadena Mayor Tornek gave a wonderful welcome and Senator Portantino, Assembly Member Chau, Assembly Member Holden and Assistant Field Deputy Christian Daly from Kathryn Barger's office shared information on upcoming legislation and efforts positively impacting children and families.  Their dedication and commitment to the wellness of our community is inspiring.

With our theme of improving outcomes for women and girls, our speakers shared their experiences in empowering young children & their communities.  We thank Ms. Julia Ruedas, El Monte licensed family child care provider, educator and family advocate for her uplifting "Oh, the Places You'll Go!" speech and Ms. Amy Woods, special education teacher, foster mother, and foster care advocate for her inspiring stories of self-less care taking and passionate advocacy.

Congratulations to our 2018 Marge Wyatt Advocacy Award recipient, Assembly Member Chris Holden.  Assembly Member Holden was acknowledged for his years of commitment and advocacy on behalf of children and their families.  The Marge Wyatt Award was created over 11 years ago to recognize an individual from our community that has excelled these advocacy efforts.  The award was even more meaningful this year, as Marge Wyatt had just recently passed away.  Marge Wyatt was a dedicated and tireless child care advocate who helped bring quality child care to the parents in our region, and whose work continues to influence others to support those efforts.

We remember Marge Wyatt with one of her powerful sayings “Our common goal of quality child care while respecting family values, gives us purpose. This enables us to work together to practice coalition advocacy. Coalition advocacy for child care people is not a one-time proposition. For us, it is an imperative on-going way of life that produces healthy children and strong families and is the basis for a continuing, functioning democracy.”

Thank you to all of our attendees and we look forward to seeing everyone next year!
