Hot off the press! Options for Learning board member Jorge Ramirez was featured in EdSource for his thoughts about the rollout of transitional kindergarten in California.
Transitional kindergarten, also known as TK, is an early entry point into the public school system for 4-year-olds, where children are introduced to school routines, learning environments, and early academic concepts.
In the Monday, September 21, 2026, article, journalist Betty Marquez Rosales discusses how TK was fully expanded statewide in California last school year; however, there have been some challenges with implementing it in different school districts.
While many kids have had positive experiences, others have struggled with overcrowding, limited access to age-appropriate facilities, and a lack of teachers with specialized training in child development.
Ramirez, a Pacific Oaks College early childhood professor and a member of the Board of Directors at Options for Learning, explained that there is no plan to evaluate the implementation of TK, which concerns him.
“I can also see the long-term effects of the lack of emotional awareness that contributes to your interpersonal relationships, your social interactions, and your pro-social behaviors,” Jorge Ramirez shared, adding that “all of us want to see” a smooth transition between preschool and TK.
Although there are concerns about some schools’ TK programs, other local preschools and early learning programs, such as Options for Learning, serve TK-age children.
